Denmark ups Iran embassy security

14 May 2010 8:30

Denmark says it will tighten security around the Iranian embassy outside Copenhagen, following violent attacks by anti-government protestors.

Police in Denmark clashed with some 70 anti-government protestors trying to enter the Iranian embassy and arrested at least four who had broken windows and caused damage to the embassy’s building on Thursday.

Later in the evening, Danish Foreign Minister Lene Espersen called her Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki to discuss and apologize for the attempted assault on the Iranian embassy and its employees.

Espersen admitted that police officials present at the scene had not done nearly enough to secure the Iranian embassy compound in the face of the violent protests.

She however stressed that the Danish government will take necessary steps to enhance the Iranian embassy’s safety measures as soon as possible.

The demonstrators were reportedly protesting against the execution of five members of the anti-Iranian PJAK terrorist group.

PJAK, which is widely recognized as the Iranian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has been branded as a terrorist organization in a number of countries, including Iran and the United States.
