Mujahids heavily damage Kandahar base

23 May 2010 17:21

New details have emerged about a rocket attack on a NATO base in southern Afghanistan amid growing assaults on the US-led military instillations in the country.

The militants fired five rockets at the Kandahar base in on Saturday evening, wounding 4 Canadian soldiers along with several NATO civilian staff, a Press TV correspondent reported on Sunday.

Two NATO helicopters were also destroyed in the attacks. A spokesman for the alliance says the attackers had tried to get into the base, but were repelled by the foreign troops.

This is the second rocket attack on a NATO base in Afghanistan over the past week. However, it was the first organized attack against the US-led forces in the country.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the militants claims the attack left 13 foreign soldiers dead and eight others wounded.

On Wednesday, Taliban militants launched an assault on the Bagram airbase outside the capital, Kabul.

Attacks against some 130,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan have recently been on the rise. The US plans to deploy 30,000 extra troops by August in an effort to bring the growing militancy under control.

The 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan has so far failed to bring security to the war-ravaged country.
