West stoking Iranophobia to sell arms

17 August 2010 9:15

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says the United States and its allies encourage Iranophobia in the Middle East to sell their weapons.

Mehmanparast said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday that Western countries were seeking to raise fear of Iran among regional countries to persuade them to pile up weapons.

“Iranian officials have repeatedly said that threats [against the countries] in the region are aimed at [creating] Islamophobia and Iranophobia and are invoked by the US and other Western countries as well as the Zionist regime … and the objective is to … provide conditions to sell their weapons,” he said.

The Iranian spokesperson further called on regional countries to remain vigilant and stand united in restoring security to the region.

Mehmanparast’s remarks come after media reported that the United States plans to sell arms in deals worth over $60 billion to certain Arab countries in the Persian Gulf to arm them against the Islamic Republic.

The US and its allies accuse Iran of developing a nuclear weapons program. Iran rejects the allegations and says its nuclear activities are no threat to the world including regional countries.

The United States is the largest arms supplier in the world.
