Lebanon Druze leader meets Iran envoy
The head of Lebanon’s Progressive Socialist Party has met with the Iranian ambassador to Beirut to discuss the prospect of enhancing ties between the two countries.
Walid Jumblatt held talks with Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Rokn-Abadi, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.
Following the meeting, the Druze leader said the move aimed to open a new page in Lebanon’s relations with the Islamic Republic.
Meanwhile, reports said Jumblatts’ visit was arranged to pave the way for future trips to Iran.
Relations between the two sides entered a new phase after Lebanese President Michel Sleiman officially asked Iran to equip and modernize the Lebanese Army.
Earlier in August, Lebanon announced a decision to reinforce its Armed Forces. Following the decision, the country’s Defense Ministry opened a bank account to accept donations for its military revamp.
The demand for Iran’s military aid came a few days after Tehran said its defense industry has the capacity to supply arms to more than 50 countries.
