47k migrants killed in Mexico in 6 years
Over 47,000 migrants have died while traveling through Mexico in the past six years with an estimated 8,800 unidentified bodies, a report shows.
The report was published on Wednesday by the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, citing figures from The Institute for Women in Migration.
Alejandro Solalinde, a priest and director of a shelter for migrants in Oaxaca, Hermanos en el Camino, also told to the newspaper that at least 10,000 Central American migrants are reportedly missing, although other estimates put that number at about 70,000.
Jorge A. Bustamante, who was UN special rapporteur for human rights of migrants in the 2005-2011 period, said in the report that President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government has not reacted to the migration trend.
According to civil society organizations, every year some estimated 400,000 undocumented migrants cross the southern border into Mexico by various means.
Earlier this year, the Mexican government established a special investigative unit to track down thousands of people who have gone missing in the country.
