Israeli troops raid Palestinian village in West Bank

342316_Israel-forces-raidClashes have broken out between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh during a demonstration against the expansion of Israeli settlements.

Heavily-armed Israeli soldiers raided the village on Friday afternoon, targeting houses and unarmed demonstrators by tear gas, coated metal bullets and sound bombs.

Several people were shot and injured by the Israeli forces, including two journalists and a woman. A video uploaded by a local activist shows that the woman, Manal Tamimi, was shot at close range.

Dozens of protesters were also injured due to inhalation of tear gas during the clashes.

On Thursday, Israeli forces also raided several Palestinian homes in the occupied West Bank, arresting at least nine people.

An Israeli official announced on Friday that Tel Aviv will reveal plans next week to build 1,400 settler units in the occupied West Bank after releasing a group of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

About 600 units would be built in the illegal settlement of Ramat, while another 800 would be constructed in other settlements of the occupied West Bank, the unnamed official said.

The presence and continued expansion of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine has created a major obstacle for the efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.

More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

The United Nations and most countries regard the Israeli settlements as illegal because the territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967 and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.
