Sheikh Salman was arrested and questioned on Saturday over allegations of “incitement”.Sheikh Ali Salman
The prosecution had ordered the release of the Al-Wefaq secretary general but “forbade him from any travel for the purposes of the investigation,” attorney general Abdul Rahman al-Said was quoted as saying by the official BNA news agency.
During his detention, Sheikh Salman had been asked about the content of a speech he gave on Friday.
The attorney general said Salman was allegedly suspected of “inciting hatred against a religious community” in the Sunni Muslim-ruled country during the address.
For its part, al-Wefaq association denounced the travel ban, saying such a decision is unjust and politically motivated.
In a statement on its official website, the main opposition group said the “circumstances surrounding the decision indicate that it is far away from the customary rules in the just trials.”
The party also said that such events “stress the importance of a political project that changes Bahrain into a state of citizenship, equity and democracy.”
