US strategies in Syria failing
A senior Iranian lawmaker says the strategies pursued by the United States and its allies in Syria over the past three years have all failed.
“The majority of countries believe that the Syrian crisis has only a political solution and the ominous phenomenon of promoting terrorism, which has been pursued by the US and its allies, has now turned into a serious and potential problem in the world,” Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Saturday.
He emphasized that from the outset of the crisis in Syria, Iran, as one of the biggest victims of terrorism, has always opposed terrorism in any place and in any form.
“Terrorism currently threatens many states, particularly countries from Europe and the US, whose nationals have carried out acts of terror in Syria and have been trained [there],” Boroujerdi said.
The lawmaker further noted that Iran would host the second meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign committees of Syria’s friend countries.
“The meeting is in line with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s policies to help end the conflict in Syria and establish peace and security in the country as the front line of resistance against the Zionist regime [of Israel],” the legislator added.
He said that the meeting would open in Tehran on Sunday in the presence of delegations from 25 countries.
Boroujerdi also stressed the importance of dispatching humanitarian aid to the Syrian people who are in dire need of food and medicine due to sanctions imposed on them over the past three years.
The first meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign committees of Syria’s friend countries was held in Tehran in March, bringing together delegations from Russia, Algeria, Lebanon, Iraq, Venezuela, Syria and Iran.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011 with over 160,000 people having been reportedly killed and millions displaced.
