Hamas: Birzeit University student elections proof of Hamas prominence in WB
The Palestinian resistance faction Hamas expressed satisfaction following the victory of the Islamic bloc at the Birzeit university on Wednesday.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the results are a big victory for the Palestinian resistance, adding that this reflects the strength of Hamas despite all the ad hominem campaigns aimed at uprooting the Movement from the West Bank.
For his part, Hamas spokesman abroad Hosam Badran said such a sweeping victory proves Palestinians’ unyielding back up of armed resistance and that Hamas remains closer to the outlooks and aspirations of the Palestinian citizen despite the oppression and arbitrary abduction-campaigns launched by the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian Authority (PA) against the group’s leaders and affiliates.
He said such a setback endured by Fatah is an implicit message to the party and the PA to redress their choices and political approaches which do not live up to the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
On Wednesday the Islamic Bloc at the Birzeit University won 26 of the 51 student council seats.
The Fatah-affiliated list garnered 19 seats, the Democratic Pole 5 and the Birzeit Student Coalition 1 seat.
In numbers Hamas received 3,400 votes, Fatah 2,545, Democratic Pole 695 and left-wing alliance 147.
Right before the elections, Fatah leaders said the results of the race would be a real reflection of Palestinians’ real will and the overall political disposition in the West Bank.
