23 April 2015 8:57

The head of the Ansar al-Furghan terrorist group has been killed by Iranian security forces in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province.

The group’s head, Hesham Azizi, and two other members were killed in the province’s southern Baftan region following a successful security operation, IRNA quoted an informed source as saying on Wednesday.

The source added that two other members of the terrorists group were also captured during the operation.

During the last few days, Azizi had been on the run following vast security operations in the Qasr-e Qand region, the source said.

Sistan-Baluchestan province has been the scene of a number attacks by terrorists who launch hit-and-run attacks and flee to neighboring Pakistan.

Iran has repeatedly criticized its eastern neighbor for failing to rein in the terrorists.

In February 2013, Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement under which both countries are required to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crime and fighting terrorism, and countering the activities that pose a threat to the national security of either country. Iran has repeatedly called on Pakistan to comply with the terms of the agreement.
