Velayati: Iran Will Boost Ties with Iraq, Syria

Senior Iranian official Ali Akbar Velayati said Iran expects a new milestone in its regional relations with Iraq and Syria by next week, Al-Alam News Network reports.

Ali Akbar Velayati, Head of Expediency Council’s Strategic Research Center, made the remarks during a meeting with Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar, Syrian Minister of Interior, on Tuesday.

Describing Tehran-Damascus relations as friendly and continuous, Velayati added Iraq and Syria have formed an important part of the Mesopotamia and thus, have a significant history of civilization.

“Based on what we discussed today, we are expecting that a change would occur in regional relations between Iran, Iraq and Syria over the next week,” said the Iranian official.

The Syrian minister, for his part, stressed that Iran has always supported Syria and stands in the same trench in fighting terrorism.

Pointing to his Monday meetings with Iranian Minister of Interior Affairs Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli and Minister of Intelligence Mahmoud Alavi, al-Shaar maintained that a number of memorandums on security cooperation for fighting terrorism have been signed between the two countries.

Noting that terrorism is labeled with different names but all follow the same objective, al-Shaar added the aim was to destroy Syria and its properties and to let Israel get its hands on this country as an easy offering.

In a joint press conference on Monday with al-Shaar, Iranian Minister of Interior Affairs announced holding of a trilateral meeting between Iran, Syria and Iraq in Baghdad to review ways of fighting against terrorism.

He also expressed hope the meeting would be a starting point over holding multilateral sessions among Islamic countries in the region against terrorism.
