Yemen troops destroy Saudi tank, 4 armored vehicles

11 July 2015 15:42

Yemeni forces have destroyed a Saudi tank and four armored vehicles in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern Jizan province in retaliation for Riyadh’s relentless military campaign against the impoverished Arab country.

Meanwhile, a civilian was killed and three others sustained injuries in fresh Saudi airstrikes on Yemen’s Lahij province on Friday.

In a Saudi raid on Shabwa province, four people lost their lives and four others were injured.

Another civilian was also killed in a Saudi airstrike in Hajjah province.

According to reports, Saudi Apache helicopters launched seven missiles on areas in Yemen’s Sa’ada province.

The latest Saudi strikes came about an hour ahead of a humanitarian pause announced by the United Nations.

The UN announced on Thursday that a humanitarian truce will come into force in Yemen to allow the delivery of urgently needed aid to civilians.

The ceasefire will take effect at 23:59 local time (2059 GMT) on Friday and will run up to the end of the holy month of Ramadan on July 17.

This comes as leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah movement Abdul-Malik al-Houthi reportedly said late on Friday that he is not hopeful over the UN-proposed truce.

According to reports, Saudi officials have announced the kingdom will not abide by any truce unless given assurances.

Saudi Arabia started its air aggression against Yemen on March 26 – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and to restore power to the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

According to the UN, over 3,000 Yemenis have been killed and 14,000 more injured in over three months of conflict in the country. Local Yemeni sources, however, say more than 4,500 people have been killed in the Saudi strikes.
