Inhuman Israeli regime cuts off water supplies to Palestinians in West Bank

13 August 2015 8:21

An inhuman Israeli water company has cut off water supplies to Palestinians in some areas in the occupied West Bank.

Mekorot, the Israeli firm, on Wednesday cut crucial water supplies to some areas in the northern West Bank, the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) said.

Palestinian authorities also said that water supplies north of the northern city of Nablus were mostly impacted after the move by Mekorot.

The Palestinian Authority, which runs the West Bank, said it is working to reconnect the empty water pipes with another source of water. The PWA has contacted Mekorot, but is yet to receive a response.

It is unclear how many people have been affected by the move.

Last week, dozens of Palestinian residents of the northern West Bank village of Kafr Qaddum staged a sit-in to protest the move by Mekorot to cut off its supplies to the village.

Before it was cut off, the water supplied some 4,000 people living there.

Tel Aviv on Monday claimed that Mekorot had decided to adjust water supplies in the northern West Bank due to increased consumption, Israeli media reported.

Israelis, including settlers, have access to 300 liters of water per day, according to the Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene group (EWASH), while the West Bank average is around 70 liters, below the World Health Organization’s recommended minimum of 100 liters per day for basic sanitation, hygiene and drinking.
