Syrian Army Declares Control Over Engineering Battalion Base in Daraa
The Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) – has declared full control over the Engineering Battalion Base (60th Engineering Battalion) inside Daraa’s northern countryside after intense clashes with the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades” on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a military source inside the 5th Armored Division’s base in Izraa (northeast Daraa), the Syrian Armed Forces imposed control of the Engineering Battalion Base after advancing south from the town of Dilli – the source further added that the Syrian Armed Forces took full control of the army base to the south of the Engineering Battalion Base.
The Engineering Battalion Base is strategically situated between the city of Sheikh Miskeen and the town of Dilli in northern Daraa; it was originally captured – along with the densely populated city of Nawa – in late 2014, when the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Division’s offensive was countered by the Free Syrian Army’s 1st Division and the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra.”
While this recent success is definitely a motivational boost for the Syrian Armed Forces in the Daraa Governorate, the latter still has a long way to go in order to recapture the large swath of territory under the control of the Free Syrian Army and their allies inside this province in southern Syria.
