Zarif: Syrians Must Have the Right to Self Determination
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wednesday that Iran’s policy toward Syria is a logical and stable one, with clear principles of self-determination for Syrians, without imposition from external factors.
In a meeting with the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, Faisal Mikdad, Zarif said that Iran’s policy on Syria is that of self-determination, that the Syrian nation should decide its own fate and future, and foreign parties may only play the role of facilitator in the political process.
According to the report issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Zarif said that Iran believes that there is a political solution for the Syrian crisis and the Vienna conference was a good move in this direction. He added that Iran has declared its position clearly.
Mikdad appreciated Iran’s support for the Syrian government and nation, and said that he is conveying warm greetings of President Bashar al-Assad to the Supreme Leader and the Iranian president.
He said that Iran’s efforts in helping Syria to settle its crisis would never be forgotten.
Mikdad arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss issues of mutual interests with Iranian officials.
