Iran seeks strategic unity among Muslims: Larijani

28 February 2016 9:20

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says fostering strategic unity among Muslim nations has always been the Islamic Republic’s top strategy.

“The general policy of the Islamic Republic is [based on] supporting democracy in all countries. We oppose the division of countries such as Iraq and Syria, which is a plot against the entire region,” Larijani said in a meeting with a number of Iraqi parliamentarians in the Iranian city of Qom on Saturday.

He added that Iran has never sought to fuel sectarianism in any country including Iraq, emphasizing that regional chaos will only serve the interests of the Israeli regime and the enemies of Islam.

Larijani said terrorist groups have created many security issues for regional countries over the past years, emphasizing the importance of making collective efforts to tackle terrorism that has been plaguing a number of Muslim countries in recent years.

Pointing to cordial relations between Tehran and Baghdad, the Iranian official said what matters to Iran is a “secure and democratic” Iraq.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh Takfiri terrorists took control of some parts of the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says about 850 Iraqis were killed and 1,450 others injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in January.
