Top US envoy heads to Cuba for migration talks

The United States has sent a high-ranking envoy to Cuba to promote talks with the Island on the betterment of ties regarding migration issues.

Craig Kelly, the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, was on his way to Havana on Wednesday to represent the US side in the talks, the State Department said, according to AFP.

“The discussions will focus on how best to promote safe, legal and orderly migration between Cuba and the United States,” it said in a statement.

Migration talks between the communist Island and the US were restarted by President Barack Obama administration last year. The two nations had been engaged in migration talks every two years before their suspension in 2003 by former president George W. Bush.

Kelly is among the top-most officials visiting Cuba to lead the talks.

Last April, the Obama administration made a series of small changes to America’s Cuba policy, some related to family travel and remittances.

Also in October, Bisa Williams, then a deputy assistant secretary of state, traveled to Havana to hold talks on resuming direct mail service between the two countries.
