Iran Denies Talks with Israel over Ron Arad

16 June 2016 19:36

The Iranian foreign ministry categorically dismissed any talks between officials of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani’s government and the Zionist regime on the fate of Ron Arad, the Israeli airman shot down over South Lebanon in 1986.

“The source, structure and contents of the report is all based on psychological warfare waged by the Zionist regime for years and shows the fake nature of the report,” a foreign ministry official told Nasim Online news agency on Wednesday.

“The officials of the former governments are also aware that they are not allowed and cannot negotiate with the Israelis on such sensitive and security issues,” the official said.

The statement came after the Israeli ‘0404’ news website claimed that “some negotiations were made with Iran about Ron Arad, the missing Israeli pilot one month ago”.

It also claimed that “the negotiations were made with the officials of (former Iranian president) Hashemi Rafsanjani, and the officials of the current government were also aware of them”.

The Israeli government has never officially declared Arad dead, and it engaged Arab and Lebanese parties in talks for possible prisoner swaps in order to secure his release.

In 2006, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said that he believed Arad was dead and that his body was missing.
