UKIP leader Nigel Farage announces resignation

4 July 2016 15:37

Leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) Nigel Farage has announced his resignation, days after spearheading a successful campaign to take Britain out of the European Union (EU).

Farage made the announcement during a speech in London on Monday, saying he was standing down as he “couldn’t possibly achieve more.”

“I have decided to stand aside as leader of UKIP. The victory for the Leave side in the referendum means that my political ambition has been achieved. I came into this business because I wanted us to a self-governing nation, not to become a career politician,” said Farage, who was elected as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the party in 1999.
