Iran’s foreign minister has stressed the Islamic Republic’s interest in enhancing mutual relations with Venezuela during a meeting with his counterpart from the Latin American country.

The meeting was held between Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif and Venzuela’s Delcy Rodríguez in Tehran on Tuesday.

Rodríguez has traveled to the Iranian capital alongside Venezuelan Oil Minister Eulogio Del Pino.

“The potentials for cooperation between the two countries are many,” Zarif said at the meeting.

The top Iranian diplomat is to travel to Venezuela during a tour of Latin America next week at the head of a high-ranking economic delegation comprising government and private sector officials.

He said the trip would have more substance “in terms of quality and quantity” compared to the previous ones made by Iranian officials to Venezuela, adding, “This very fact signals Iran’s deep attention to the maximal enhancement of relations with Latin American countries in every aspect.”

Zarif said he hoped the trip would lead to the development of bilateral relations in the two areas of banking and energy considering that Iranian representatives from the two sectors will be accompanying him in the trip.

The Iranian foreign minister also said Tehran was ready to contribute in whatever manner possible to the upcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which is to be held in Venezuela later in the year.

Venezuela is slated to take over the movement’s rotating presidency from Iran.

NAM is a political grouping of 120 member countries and 21 observer countries that are considered to be not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

For her part, Rodríguez welcomed the prospect of the scheduled visit by the Iranian foreign minister and urged the expansion of the bilateral ties between Iran and Venezuela in all areas.
