Iranian Commander Blasts Turkey over Lax Border Control

28 May 2017 18:29

Commander of the Iranian Border Guards Brigadier General Qassem Rezayee warned Turkey to take practical measures to tighten its lax security control over the borders with Iran to prevent outlaws from crossing the border.

Two Iranian border guards were killed in clashes with PJAK (the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan) terrorists in the Northwestern province of West Azerbaijan, bordering Turkey.

Clashes with terrorists erupted on Saturday afternoon as the Iranian border guards of Orumiyeh regiment were driving along the border line to change shifts.

General Qassemi condemned the terrorist incident, and said, “We will certainly give a crushing response to these moves.”

“We consider Turkey as responsible and the country should account for this act,” he added.

While earlier reports said that the terrorist incident has left 7 wounded soldiers, General Rezayee said that 4 of his forces have been injured.

The terrorist incident happened as top Iranian and Turkish security officials in a meeting in Moscow discussed ways to increase mutual cooperation to provide for the common interests of both nations.

The meeting was held between Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and Turkish Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor Seifollah Haji Muftioglu on Wednesday afternoon on the sidelines of the 8th International Security Conference in Russia.

During the meeting, Shamkhani explained special security situation in the region, and underlined holding regular meetings between national security officials of the two states to eliminate misunderstandings, which might have negative impact on warm and historical relations between the two neighbors.

Muftioglu, for his part, expressed pleasure for holding first meeting with Shamkhani, and called for continued bilateral meetings to consider issues of mutual interest and determining mechanisms to provide common interests of both nations.
