Iran’s First VP Jahangiri praises resistance of Syrian nation

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri has praised the resistance of the Syrian nation in the face of the hardships caused by the violence in the country.

Jahangiri’s remarks came in a Monday meeting in Tehran with visiting Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi.

The Iranian vice president thanked the Syrian premier for representing his country in the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Hassan Rohani on August 4, which was attended by Iranian officials as well as foreign dignitaries.

Jahangiri reiterated the support of the Iranian nation for the people of Syria, hoping for a speedy improvement of the Syrian people’s lives and the Arab country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Syrian prime minister pointed to the historic relations between Iran and Syria, saying that the expanding ties between the two countries has produced great outcomes for both nations.

Halqi also expressed optimism that the chaos in Syria would come to an end through the support of the Islamic Republic for the Syrian nation.

On August 4, the Syrian prime minister also met with President Rohani.

The Iranian president said in the meeting that the Islamic Republic condemns terrorist activities and foreign intervention in Syria.

In a separate meeting on Monday, Jahangiri met with Special Representative of UN Secretary General for Afghanistan Jan Kubish.

The Iranian vice president expressed Tehran’s willingness to expand cooperation with the United Nations toward resolving Afghanistan’s difficulties and combating the issue of drug trafficking.

Jahangiri said Iran could effectively help resolve issues in the region and in Afghanistan.

For his part, Kubish underlined the UN’s readiness to cooperate with Iran in resolving problems in Afghanistan and the region, adding that Iran has great capacity to help tackle difficulties in Syria and Afghanistan as well as other regional issues.

The UN envoy also expressed congratulations on President Rohani’s election victory and praised the Iranian president’s remarks during his inauguration ceremony on unity, improving public employment, combating poverty and mutual respect.
