UK police frees Qur’an desecrators

British police say they have released on bail a gang of men who had filmed themselves burning a copy of the holy Qur’an on the anniversary of 9/11 attacks.

The men were arrested after allegedly setting fire to the Muslim holy book in the backyard of a pub and posting the video on YouTube, The Daily Mail reported.

In the film, the men, who have wrapped towels around their heads, are seen gathered round a copy of the holy Qur’an in the backyard of The Bugle pub in Lean Lane, Felling, Gateshead, according to the report.

They then show the holy book to the camera before dousing it with fuel from a red can and lighting it, the report said.

Police said they sought the perpetrators last Wednesday after the video was posted online.

They arrested the six on charges of stirring hatred but released them on bail without charging any of them.

The incident comes after an extremist US pastor from Florida instigated worldwide protests when he announced that he would burn 200 copies of the holy Qur’an on the anniversary of September 11, 2001 attacks.

He was forced to backtrack on his decision after strong protests from world’s Muslim communities.
