Three people have been shot at Delaware State University when gunfire broke out on the school’s campus, officials say.

The shooting reportedly happened at around 8 p.m. Saturday at a school-sanctioned sorority and fraternity cookout event, according to university President Harry L. Williams.

The victims were taken to Kent General Hospital and it was reported that they were in stable condition Saturday night.

Officials have not released the names of the victims or if they were the students of the Delaware University.

The gunfire started on the main campus during Field Day, which is a large annual cookout that began at 4 p.m. and was set to end at 9 p.m.

The picnic-like event was attended by thousands of people who were all asked to stay indoors.

“It looks like this happened in the middle of it,” said university spokesman Carlos Holmes. “We’ve directed our students to get into their dormitories and stay there, and we’ve directed outsiders to get off of our campus at this point.”

Police began a massive search across the campus and areas in the vicinity of the university, but so far no suspect has been identified or arrested.

“The safety of our students continues to be paramount and our police will aggressively continue their investigation until an arrest or arrests are made in this shooting incident,” Williams said.

The last shooting incident at Delaware University happened in November, 2014, when a student was shot in the chest in what was described by police as a drug-related robbery.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States. About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the country at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.
