‘Death to Israel’ – Thousands attend Hezbollah rally for Al-Quds in Beirut
Thousands marched on Beirut’s streets on Monday, as part of a Hezbollah-organised rally against US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem declaration. Secretary General of the Hezbollah group Hassan Nasrallah made a televised speech during the protest, during which he called for a third Palestinian intifada.
“The most important response will be to announce a third Palestinian Intifada on all occupied Palestinian territories, and it is upon the Arab and Islamic world to stand by [the Palestinian’s] side,” said Nasrallah.
“They wanted this decision to be the beginning of the end of Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause. Come together to make this American decision the beginning of the end of this usurping entity forever. Let our slogan and approach be death to Israel,” added Nasrallah. “Trump’s decision would prove to be the beginning of the end of Israel, God willing.”
Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday in an address from Washington D.C. He also began the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The decision caused an immediate outrage and fury from countries in the Islamic world.
The status of the Holy City is a contentious issue in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
