Iran ready for worst scenario if US quits JCPOA: Former negotiator

10 January 2018 12:09

Iran is ready for the worst scenario if the US withdraws the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between Iran and G5+1 (US, UK, Russia, China, France plus Germany) in 2015, a former nuclear negotiator said on Tuesday.

‘We are prepared for the worst status not only in the political field but also in the economic field,’ Majid Takht-e Ravanchi who was the member of Iran’s nuclear negotiating team in 2015 said in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

The official referred to Iran’s commitment to the JCPOA and said that most of the world states want extension of the nuclear deal.

‘We will not be the first country which withdraws the JCPOA,’ Takht-e Ravanchi, currently the Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran’s Presidential Office, said adding that the Islamic Republic will stay in the nuclear deal as long as it benefits from the deal.

The US administration has done a great deal during the past year to kill the JCPOA. Although the international Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed Iran’s commitment to the deal eight times, the US President Donald Trump didn’t confirm Iran’s commitment and sent the deal to the Congress to be decided on.

The Congress couldn’t reach a decision in the legal period, so the US president is to announce his decision on January 12 on the issue.
