Restoration of ancient Aleppo mosque underway
A project to restore an ancient mosque in Syria’s Aleppo has started. The Great Mosque of Aleppo or the Umayyad Mosque was standing strong since the 13th century but was badly damaged during the Syrian war.
The iconic place of worship is being restored with the help of the Chechen Republic’s Akhmad Kadyrov Fund. Aleppo witnessed some of the most brutal fighting during the Syrian conflict. On 24 April 2013, Takfiri militants had razed the minaret and the southern gate of the mosque. Hard work is now ongoing to put the war-torn city back together since government forces retook it over a year ago.
