Qatar complains to UN over UAE, Bahraini aircraft airspace violation

11 March 2018 13:45

Qatar has issued a complaint to the United Nations over fresh violations of its air space by Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Qatar News Agency on Saturday, a UAE military transport aircraft carrier violated Qatari airspace on January 14 and again on February 25.

On February 26, a Bahraini military plane also illegally entered Qatar’s airspace.

“Qatar called upon the Security Council and the United Nations to take the necessary measures… to maintain international peace and security,” said the report.

According to a Qatar News Agency report on Friday, Doha complained to the United Nations about a January incident, in which it said a United Arab Emirates (UAE) vessel hijacked a Qatari fishing boat with eight crewmen.

The United Arab Emirates is one of four Arab countries, which also include Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, that imposed in June a trade and diplomatic embargo on Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism, an allegation strongly denied by Doha.

The quartet of boycotters have also barred Qatari aircraft from using their airspace. Qatar’s only land border with Saudi Arabia has also been blocked as a result.

The Saudi-led bloc then presented Qatar with a list of demands, among them downgrading ties with Iran, and gave it an ultimatum to comply with them or face consequences.

Doha, however, refused to meet the demands and said that they were meant to force the country to surrender its sovereignty. Qatar has also said it had too many financial resources at its disposal to be afraid of the financial assault.

In January, Qatar and the UAE traded accusations of airspace violations.
