An official with Iran’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization said more than 1.2 million people have taken the courses held as part of the National Quran Memorization Plan.

Hojat-ol-Islam Ahmad Sharafkhani, the organization’s cultural and social affairs deputy, made the announcement on the sidelines of the 38th National Quran Competition, which is underway in the western city of Kermanshah.

He said holding Quranic courses for so many people is an indication of a serious resolve for promoting Quranic activities.

Implementing the National Quran Memorization Plan began in Iran four years ago after the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution called for training ten million Quran memorizers in the country.

In addition to the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization, a number of other government bodies including the Education Ministry, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, and the Culture Ministry contribute to the implementation of the plan.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Hojat-ol-Islam Sharafkhani hailed the national Quran competition as the biggest Quranic event in Iran and a manifestation of the country’s extensive Quranic activities.

The 38th edition of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s national Quran competition got underway on Saturday morning in Kermanshah.

More than 630 Quran reciters and memorizers from different parts of the country are attending the week-long competition.

40 Quranic workshops and 86 Quran recitation programs are also being held on the sidelines of the competition.

The national Quran contest is annually held in Iran by the Awqaf organization to identify Quranic talents and promote Quranic activities in the country.
