1 dead, 3 injured in Tennessee blast

An explosion at an ammunition plant in the US state of Tennessee on Wednesday left one person dead and three others injured, local authorities said.

The explosion happened at the Rio Ammunition plant in McEwen, about 56 miles west of Nashville, said Odell Poyner, Humphreys County director of emergency management.

Four people were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with blast injuries, two by helicopter, according to hospital spokesman Craig Boerner.

One man died at the medical center and a second man was listed in critical condition, Boerner said. Two other patients, a man and a woman, were listed as stable, he added.

The blast at the ammunition plant in central Tennessee caused a smoldering fire in the building and touched off small brush fires nearby, authorities said.

The reason for the explosion is not clear yet.

Rio Ammunition, which belongs to Accurate Energetic Systems, manufactures ammunition for defense, aerospace, and commercial purposes.
