One person has been killed and two others were wounded after a shooting near Manhattan’s Penn Station in New York City, police said.

Dozens of New York Police Department officers responded to the shooting incident at Eighth Avenue and West 35th Street at about 6:15 am on Monday.

NYPD officers cordoned off several streets around the site of the shooting.

One man, 43, was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting, authorities said.

A 45-year-old man was struck in the neck and abdomen and was in critical condition. A second man, 48, was hit in the leg.

First responders rushed both victims to Bellevue Hospital.

No suspect has been taken into custody and the motive behind the shooting was not immediately known.

Witnesses told local media that the shooting seemed to have resulted from a fight at a nearby restaurant.

No description of the assailant or assailants has been released but witnesses said three men were seen fleeing the scene in a silver vehicle.

Penn Station is a major transportation center for commuters making their way on the New York City’s public transit, Amtrak trains and other connections.

So far this year, nearly 11,300 people have been killed in US gun violence and nearly 23,000 have been injured, according to Gun Violence Archive, a not for profit organization that provides information about gun-related violence in the United States.

President Barack Obama, who has been pushing for gun laws reform, has described the inability to reduce gun violence in the US as the “biggest frustration” of his time in office.
