A car bomb explosion in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has left at least one person dead and two policemen injured.

According to a statement by Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry, the car bomb exploded at a security checkpoint in the capital on Thursday night.

The ministry added that the driver of the car was killed and two policemen sustained injuries in the attack.

A spokesman for the ministry also stated that the injured were transferred to hospital and were in a “stable condition,” the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The spokesman added that the incident took place after the policemen manning the checkpoint on al-Hair Road stopped the car for a routine control.

“The driver blew up the car and killed himself,” the spokesman added.

Saudi authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly incident.

On May 22, a blast at a Shia mosque in Qudaih village in the Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province killed 21 worshipers, including two children.

The ISIL Takfiri group, engaged in a war against the governments of Syria and Iraq, said it was behind the bombing in Eastern Province.

The notorious group is widely believed to be funded and supported by the Persian Gulf kingdom.
