At least one person has been killed in protests in Bangladesh by supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On Tuesday, protests against the arrest of BNP leaders turned violent in the northern town of Bogra, leading to the death of a bystander.

The victim, who was a truck driver, was injured and taken to hospital, where he died later.

The protesters threw handmade bombs at police forces, who fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

BNP officials have been accused of alleged war crimes in Bangladesh’s war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Meanwhile, supporters of Gonojagoron Mancha (People’s Resurgence Platform), a forum demanding the trial of war criminals, staged a counter demonstration by taking to the streets of the capital Dhaka.

Also on Tuesday, the BNP called for a 36-hour nationwide strike to demand a fair trial for the leaders.
