100 UK flights canceled, delayed over heavy fog

The flights of thousands of passengers have been cancelled or delayed at London airports as a result of heavy fog and poor visibility, reports say.

Early on Wednesday, fog caused more than 100 flights to be cancelled or delayed at Heathrow Airport and other city airports.

A total of 80 flights have been canceled at Heathrow Airport.

A statement by Heathrow Airport said that the cancelations included flights to Berlin, Belfast, and Dublin. The airport also said that three inbound flights were diverted to Stansted.

“It’s taking longer to rise than we expected but it is lifting,” a spokeswoman for Heathrow Airport said.

Heathrow handles an average of 1,300 flights per day.

At London City Airport 20 departing flights were cancelled and nearly 40 arrivals were cancelled, delayed, or diverted. Delays were also reported at Luton and Gatwick.

Also, six flights were canceled and 18 others delayed at Southampton Airport. Airplanes have not yet been able to land at the airport.

British Airways, Air France, and Dutch carrier KLM were also affected by bad weather.

Authorities say weather conditions are expected to improve later in the day.
