Over 130 foreign-sponsored militants fighting the Syrian government have turned themselves in to the country’s authorities.

One hundred and thirty-six militants, who were on the Syrian government’s wanted list, surrendered to authorities on Sunday to settle their legal status.

The militants, who were from the city of Aleppo and its countryside, also submitted their identification documents to the Syrian army.

Syrian officials say those who have not committed crimes will be released if they promise not to carry arms and avoid threatening the country’s national security.

On April 6, some 27 wanted people from the cities of Homs and Hama turned themselves in.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 215,000 people, according to reports.

With the conflict now in its fifth year, almost half of all Syrians have been forced to flee their homes, according to the UN.

New figures indicate that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives across Syria in 2014.
