2 Dead, 26 Wounded in Weekend Shootings in Chicago

Two people have been killed and at least 26 others wounded in weekend shootings in Chicago, police said on Sunday.

Late Friday, three people were shot — one fatally — in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

The three were shot while standing on the sidewalk in the 500 block of North Lavergne about 11:40 p.m., according to Chicago Police.

Leander E. Winford II, 59, was shot in the right arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the 2200 block of South 14th Avenue in Broadview.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left leg and a 32-year-old man was shot in the left arm and leg, police said. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

A 22-year-old man was fatally shot in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side Friday night.

Kendall Smith, of the 11200 block of South Indiana, was standing on the sidewalk in the 11200 block of South Michigan about 9:30 p.m. when he heard gunfire and felt pain, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m., authorities said, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Sunday.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Saturday night in the South Side Oakland neighborhood.

An 18-year-old man was shot in the shoulder about 8:15 p.m. in the 4100 block of South Ellis, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized.

Less than an hour earlier a 22-year-old man was seriously wounded when he was shot in the torso at 7:39 p.m. in the 1900 block of North Mozart, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

At least 22 other people have been shot on the South and West sides since 4 p.m. Friday.
