3 more killed in Kashmir protests

Three more protesters against the desecration of the holy Qur’an in the US have been killed and several others injured in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The government troops in the southern town of Mendhar, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the summer capital Srinagar, opened fire at the latest anti-US demonstration in the region, following the desecration of Islam’s holy book in the United States.

The incident occurred while protests and curfew continue for the fourth day in several districts of Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir regions after the sacrilegious actions.

In a separate incident, pro-independence demonstrators set fire to two government buildings to protest the round-the-clock curfew across Kashmir.

Border district Poonch, 240 kilometers west of Jammu City, remained under curfew for the fourth day on Wednesday after about 31 protestors were injured while clashing with police, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Massive protests also rocked mountainous Kishtwar district, east of Jammu City, as thousands of people took to the streets to express their rage against the desecration of the holy Qur’an in the US.

Shouting anti US and pro-freedom slogans, protesters were blocked by the police, triggering violent clashes between the two sides that injured over half a dozen people.

Kashmir has been the scene of violent clashes on an almost daily basis. Close to 90 Kashmiri protesters have lost their lives at the hands of Indian troops since the unrest erupted back in June. The protesters and residents have lately reported food shortages.
