Human rights activists in Saudi Arabia have raised concerns over a new anti-terrorism draft law passed by the kingdom, saying it will further crack down on political dissent.

Activists say that the law, approved by the Saudi cabinet on Monday, would allow the kingdom to intensify its crackdown on political dissent and will also target civil society activists.

The cabinet said in a statement that the law “will strike a balance between the risk of terrorist acts and human rights protection. “

The statement said the crimes include “disturbing public order, or undermining the security and stability of the nation, or exposing the nation’s unity to danger… or defaming the reputation of the state or its position.”

Activists, however, said that the law was too broad and would also target civil society activists who are calling for democratic reforms in the country.

One Saudi activist said that women campaigning for the right to drive could be tried under the new law as they have been accused of acting against public order.

Activists also said that the anti-terror law showed the kingdom’s resolve to crush pro-democracy and anti-discrimination demonstrations.

According to local media outlets, King Abdullah is to issue a decree to put the law into effect.

The law was proposed by the Saudi Interior Ministry and reviewed by the advisory Shura Council.

Numerous anti-government demonstrations have been held in Saudi Arabia since February 2011. Protesters primarily called for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to what they call widespread discrimination.

The Al Saud family has also been the target of the protests, especially after security forces killed five protesters and injured many others in Eastern Province in November 2011.
