Afghan lawmakers reject most of Karzai cabinet

Lawmakers in Afghanistan’s parliament have reportedly rejected more than half of President Hamid Karzai’s cabinet nominees.

Those rejected include nominees for the ministries of Justice, Higher Education, Religious Affairs, Public Welfare and Energy.

Earlier, the president had dropped two cabinet members, who faced charges of corruption but retained Ismail Khan.

Karzai proposed Ismail Khan to keep his post as energy minister despite charges of human rights abuses against him.

During the Saturday session, nominees for the ministries of Education, Interior, Defense, Finance and Culture won the vote of confidence.

Karzai appointed 24 nominees for cabinet positions including a woman in late December, but he did not nominated anyone for the Foreign Ministry post.
