Afghan MPs break before cabinet confirmations

Afghan lawmakers will leave for winter break without waiting for President Hamid Karzai to get their approval for filling nearly half of his cabinet.

A Parliament spokesman said on Sunday in Kabul that the MPs would now break until February 20.

On Saturday, the Parliament rejected 10 of Karzai’s nominees for cabinet posts, approving only seven of them.

The Afghan Parliament has twice rejected the majority of his candidates.

In early January, Karzai had ordered Parliament to delay its winter recess to vote on his new group of Cabinet nominees. However, this time he did not forbid them to go.

Karzai now has 14 out of the 25 cabinet positions confirmed.

Afghanistan has been without a functioning government since the elections in August, 2009.
