The latest report from the respected journal Lancet Psychiatry made uncomfortable reading. In an analysis of global mortality statistics, an estimated 45,000 people took their own life because of issues surrounding unemployment annually.
In 2012, the latest year for which statistics exist – 5981 people committed suicide. There is no public data on how many people took their own lives because of their employment situation but anecdotal evidence paints a distressing picture
The government disputes this and says the welfare system provides a safety net for those in need.
With so many individuals at risk of harming themselves campaigners want there to be a more effective strategy put in place so there is more joined up thinking around ensuring that those who are in danger of experiencing suicidal thoughts and acting on them and get the help they need before it’s too late.
With full uk economic recovery still a work in progress and the threat of tightening austerity measures, 2015 seems set to bring more bad news.
