American soldier killed in Afghanistan

An American soldier has been killed in war-ravaged Afghanistan, bringing to 502 the foreign troop casualties in 2010.

NATO issued a statement on Tuesday, saying that the soldier was killed in clashes with militants in southern Afghanistan.

The Western alliance did not give any details about the exact location of the incident, but there has been reports of ongoing clashes with militants in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar.

Some 502 foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan since January, compared to a total of 521 deaths in 2009.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has sparked widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the continuation of the Afghan war.

Elsewhere, Taliban militants killed a local governor in northern Afghanistan.

Afghan officials said the chief administrator for Nahrin district in Baghlan province, Ahmad Masrour, was killed after his car came under attack by the militants.

Masrour’s driver was also killed in the assault.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that a bodyguard was also killed.
