Americans unhappy as UN summit ends

The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) summit has ended while many unhappy Americans believe their own problems should have been addressed first.

Top leaders from different parts of the world attended the UN meeting, which ended on Friday, to discuss international issues such as the situation in Sudan, the Middle East, women’s empowerment, climate change, world poverty and hunger, and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Many Americans, however, stressed that they were more directly affected by dilemmas such as pollution, traffic and economic woes, adding that they expected the government to tackle such problems first, a Press TV correspondent reported.

“I care more about the recession here than … what’s going on in other countries. We need help here in America,” said an American citizen, aiming to draw the global attention to the financial crisis which has hardly hit the United States and crippled its economy.

“I heard last night that Israel didn’t show up. All this treaty going on here is for their benefit and they didn’t even show face,” said another citizen who closely followed the UN event.

The eight MDGs aimed to discuss a wide of range of issues ranging from reducing extreme poverty, world hunger to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, by 2015.
