Analyst: Bin Omar’s Resignation Aimed at Diverting Public Opinion from Yemen Crisis

A senior Middle-East expert believes that the resignation of Jamal Bin Omar, the UN special envoy to Yemen, is aimed at diverting the public opinion from the crisis in Yemen deteriorated by the Saudi-led military strikes.
“The resignation of Bin Omar who had been under pressure before and couldn’t adopt a logical stance on the Yemeni crisis may be nothing but a piece of propaganda to divert the public opinion from the depth of the crimes (committed by Saudi Arabia and its regional and western allies),” Mosayyeb Nayeemi told FNA on Friday.

He, meantime, said that the images being released from the Saudi-led crimes in Yemen don’t leave anything hidden from the public eyes.

“This is the start of a crisis in which Saudi Arabia has entangled and has no way but to surrender to escape from it,” Nayeemi said.

A UN statement late Wednesday said Bin Omar “has expressed an interest in moving on to another assignment” and that his successor will be named “in due course.” Bin Omar’s departure creates a diplomatic vacuum in Yemen, where he had been the key international figure working to bring the feuding parties together, even after diplomats fled embassies and the UN staff pulled out.

Bin Omar, who previously served as an envoy in Iraq and Afghanistan, had come under criticism from some in the Middle-East, as his recent efforts to broker peace showed little success.

Saudi Arabia started its unauthorized aerial bombardments on Yemen on March 26. The Saudi-led attacks have drawn international criticism after claiming the lives of at least 2,600 people, mostly women and children, and razing thousands of housing units to the ground.

Also, thousands of people have been injured during the attacks as the Saudi offensive enters its 23rd consecutive day.

Some western countries, including the US, have backed the Saudi aggression despite international calls for a swift halt to the attacks.
