The US President Barack Obama says, unlike the Russian government, Washington is certain that the Syrian troops have used chemical weapons in their fight against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday, Barack Obama said he has requested a UN investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Army against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants.

The UN has already announced that the militants have used chemical weapons, but it cannot verify that the Syrian government has used them..

On June 14, the US president ordered his administration to provide the militants with weapons, a day after Washington claimed that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against the militants and thus crossed Washington’s “red line.”

Syria strongly rejects such claims and says the militants have used chemical weapons on several occasions, including an attack in the region of Khan al-Assal in the northwestern province of Aleppo on March 19, where over two dozen people died.

On June 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the materials collected by the Obama administration regarding the use of chemical weapons by Syrian troops would not meet the requirements of the Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Obama also backed the decision to supply sophisticated arms to the insurgents fighting in Syria.

Obama said Washington’s overriding goal is to see a “peaceful, non-sectarian and legitimate Syria,” adding that the only solution will be a full transition excluding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The first Geneva declaration, adopted in June 2012, calls for a peaceful transition in Syria without excluding any party.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed so far.
