Arab League urges end to Gaza siege

Days after aid convoys headed to Gaza were attacked by Israel, Arab League Chief Amr Moussa arrives in the coastal strip demanding an end to the three-year siege on the impoverished region.

“This blockade which we are all here to confront must be broken and the position of the Arab League is clear,” Moussa said.

“Not only the Arabs, but the entire world should stand with the Palestinian people against the siege of Gaza and what is happening in the occupied territories,” the Arab League chief was quoted as saying by AFP.

Earlier in the morning, Moussa arrived in the coastal region which has been under the crippling Israeli blockade since 2007.

He entered the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and was welcomed by the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas and several other Palestinian officials.

Moussa’s decision to visit the area for the first time came after the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aid convoy left at least 20 activists dead and dozens others injured.

The convoy was carrying 10,000 of tons of humanitarian relief for the 1.5 million impoverished people of Gaza.

Moussa is scheduled to hold talks with Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya during his one-day visit.
