Argentina urges end to Israel attacks on Gaza

Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has urged that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) ask Israel to put an end to its aggression against the Tel Aviv-besieged Gaza Strip.

In a letter, Kirchner said on Monday that “I’m calling on people to express our demand to the Security Council to immediately order an end” to Tel Aviv’s attacks against the coastal sliver.

“As of today, more than 100 citizens have died. The population density in the Gaza Strip make it impossible to protect citizens if these airstrikes continue. A ground invasion would bring catastrophic consequences, like those that occurred during the December 2008 invasion…,” she added, referring to Israel’s December 2008-January 2009 Gaza War that killed more than 1,400 Palestinians.

“Unasur (Union of South American Nations) is obligated to act in defense of human life and our intentions must be credible, removed from geopolitical and economic interests,” Fernandez stated, addressing the intergovernmental union. “Other countries have lost that credibility over the years as a consequence of their actions.”

At least 109 Palestinians have been killed and more than 900 others injured in intensified Israeli attacks, which started on November 14.

Israel frequently carries out airstrikes and other attacks on the Gaza Strip, saying the acts of aggression are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, in violation of international law, disproportionate force is always used and civilians are often killed or injured.

The attacks rage on while Israel keeps up its crippling blockade on Gaza, which it imposed on the enclave in 2007.
