Syrian army troops have carried out a series of mop-up operations in the capital Damascus, destroying terrorist hideouts and large amounts of heavy machineguns, Syrian media reports.

The Syrian government forces on Monday managed to kill and injure several foreign-backed militants in eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, official SANA news agency said.

The army soldiers also clashed with militants in Harasta neighborhood in Damascus and killed a number of them as well as destroying their weapons and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Syrian soldiers discovered a tunnel with 400m length in al-Qaboun area under the Damascus-Homs highway that connects al-Qaboun and Joubar.

According to military sources, the tunnel was used by the militants to transfer weapons and ammunitions and to attack the civilians.

In northern city of Aleppo, the army soldiers continued operations against foreign-sponsored armed groups. The soldiers destroyed cars coming from Turkey loaded with weapons and ammunitions. Several militants were killed in the operations.

Earlier in the day, a number of militants were killed and several others injured in an explosion in Bani Zaid neighborhood in Aleppo city.

The army has recently conducted successful clean-up operations in the country, inflicting heavy losses on Takfiri extremists.

The foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, since March 2011.

Western powers and their regional allies including the Israeli regime, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supporting the anti-Syria militant groups, including al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, to overthrow the Syrian government.
