Fresh protest by Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) in Pakistan slams killings of Shia Muslims

Pakistanis have once against protested against the targeted killings of Shia Muslims, demanding the government to take action against the violence, Press TV reports.

The protests in Karachi were organized by Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and the Shia Ulema Council.

“If the rulers cannot provide security, then why are they still in office? Why have they spoilt the time of 180 million Pakistanis for five years? Enough is enough. If they cannot provide security, then they should leave,” said MWM’s Ahmed Iqbal Rizvi.

Hundreds of Shia Muslims have been killed across Pakistan this year.

On Monday, Malik Mukhtar Hussain, a Shia Muslim figure, was assassinated by six gunmen in the Chiniot city in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

On December 30, 2012, a bomb ripped through a convoy of three buses carrying Shia pilgrims in the Mastung district, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Quetta in the Balochistan province. Nearly 20 people were killed. The victims were on their way to Iran.

Shias make up 20 percent of the country’s 180-million-strong population.

Pro-Taliban militant groups have been involved in a violent campaign against Shia Muslims in Pakistan over the past years.

The attacks have targeted many doctors, engineers, high-ranking government officials, teachers, and politicians.

Human rights groups in Pakistan have vehemently criticized the government for its failure to stem the rising tide of violence against the country’s Shia Muslims.
