Assyrian body raps CAR Muslim killing

The Assyrian Universal Alliance has strongly condemned the killing of Muslims in the Central African Republic (CAR).

In a note, Younathan Betkolia, the secretary general of the alliance, said that “bloodthirsty anti-religion groups” are slaughtering Muslims in the African country in the name of Christianity.

He said that the militia is staining the image of Christianity by committing genocide in CAR.

The Assyrian Universal Alliance condemns this offensive and malicious move and calls on the global community to address the issue, said Betkolia, who is also an Iranian lawmaker.

The brutal violence in the Central African Republic has been ongoing since December last year, when Christian militia launched coordinated attacks against the mostly Muslim members of the Seleka group.

Last month the fierce fighting in the African country reportedly claimed over 1,000 lives.

France deployed its troops in December 2013 after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution giving Paris and the African Union the go-ahead to send troops to the strife-torn country.

However, the deployment of the French and African Union forces has done little to end the ongoing violence in the country.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned of potential new threats against the Muslim community in the African country.
